Sadakichi Seven: Hideyoshi no Ougon  Hudson Soft1988The first Adventure game for the PC-Engine. You play the role of an agent of some governmental organization and it is your task to find the pieces of a document which shows the location of the hiddon gold of a guy named Hideyoshi (a historical figure I think). Of course the evil underground organization 'NATTO' wants the same. And so you walk around talk with persons, travel between Osaka and Tokyo and collect the pieces of the document.
Since this game comes on HuCard and not on CD-ROM the number of locations are quite limited and you visit many places again and again. The graphics itself are only average as well. From the games premise I expected a very humorous adventure but the game itself wasn't too lighthearted (but perhaps I just didn't understand enough...).

Jinmu Denshou Yaksa  Big Club (Wolf Team)1989
[103]***
[62]***Reviewed as "Japan Warrior".
[1]***Yaksa was first published as a side-scrolling action game on Japanese homecomputers, so I was surprised to see that the PC-Engine Yaksa became a strange [game=#192]Space Harrier[/game] clone. Well, Space Harrier is a good game and thus even the fact that the whole samurai background just doesn't fit the Space Harrier playstyle, I thought it could be a fun game after all. Man, was I wrong. The game manages to be bad in every aspect. The graphics are plain dull with extremely bad scrolling/scaling, which makes the game unplayable. The music and sound effects hurt the ears. This game would be amongst the "Worst 5" PC-Engine games if you ask me.

Takeda Shingen  Aicom1989
[142]***
[37]***A Beat'em up game with setting in medieval Japan. The PC Engine version is some kind of crippled conversion of the Jaleco Arcade game from 1988. The game fails miserably, mainly due to its bad collision detection and numerous unfair situations combined with a very unspectacular presentation sound and graphic-wise.

Maison Ikkoku: Omoide no Photograph  Micro Cabin1989Based on a famous manga/anime series and ported from japanese homecomputers, this game fails to be a good PC-Engine game. Your goal is to make all the somewhat crazy housemates and especially the attractive female landlord happy by giving them presents and doing other things that please them. The graphics are really bad. Very few colors are used and it looks more like a NES game. Also there are too few locations, you are visiting the same rooms again and again. The puzzles and the whole gameplay are boring, maybe you might draw some more motivation from the game when you are familiar with the manga/anime. Well, in the end I got stuck halfway in the game despite a japanese walkthrough. I can't say I regret that this happened.***Adventure game based on an old anime by Rumiko Takahashi (Ranma 1/2). Unless you're a fan of the series, stay away from this one.
